What Is the Average Cost of Running a Hot Tub?
8 min read Updated 27 Jan 2026
Five layers of insulation, a heat-lock cover and a heat pump bypass fitted as standard. More heat stays in, less energy goes out.
Most heat leaves a hot tub through the water surface, so the cover does more for your running cost than anything under the cabinet. The Thermo Cover uses a tapered polystyrene core, 120mm at the centre falling to 90mm at the edges, so rain and snow run off rather than pool. An aluminium spine stops it sagging under weight.
The cores are sealed in moisture-proof bags, because foam that absorbs water stops insulating and gets heavy. UV-resistant fabric with a protective cap keeps it from fading, heavy-duty straps hold it down in wind, and four locking clips keep children and pets out.
Every model leaves the factory with a heat pump bypass installed. If you add an air source heat pump, now or later, it connects without cutting into the plumbing.
A heat pump moves heat from the air rather than generating it, and in UK conditions returns three to five units of heat for each unit of electricity. On a tub used year round it is the single biggest running cost saving available, and the bypass means the option stays open for the life of the tub.
Running cost depends on your tariff, your climate, how often you use the tub and how well you look after the cover. Insulation cannot change the first two, but it decides how much of the heat you pay for you get to keep.
Our running cost guide walks through real figures by range and by season, including what changes when a heat pump is fitted.
Between roughly 1 and 2 pounds a day for a well insulated tub used a few times a week on a standard UK tariff, less with a heat pump. Our running cost guide gives the working by range and season.
It combines spray foam on the shell with reflective and foil layers and rigid board, rather than filling the whole cabinet with foam. That keeps the plumbing accessible for servicing while insulating the parts that lose heat.
No. The tub is designed to run efficiently on its own heater. A heat pump is an option for owners who use the tub year round and want the lowest possible running cost. The bypass is already fitted, so it can be added at any point.
